Covid-19 and Development: Invisible, othered and exploited – circular migrants in India’s cities

This Sussex Development Lecture will explore the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on interstate rural-urban migrants in India. Drawing on key findings from empirical research conducted over a number of years, the speakers will unpack the different elements that have led to hyperprecarity and protracted immobility for circular migrants. They will discuss how local governments in India’s cities need to be empowered and made accountable for the provision of services and housing for their migrant populations.

Speakers

  • Priya Deshingkar, Professor of Migration and Development at the School of Global Studies, University of Sussex.
  • Ms Mukta Naik, Fellow at the Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi.
