The organizations are collaborating with the Global Alliance, engaging in its development and implementation to advance social protection in the fight against hunger and poverty worldwide.

The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and the socialprotection.org platform are proud to announce their role as founding members of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.

Unveiled under Brazil’s G20 Presidency, the Alliance offers an innovative approach to accelerating progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 (No Poverty) and 2 (Zero Hunger). Its mission is to mobilize resources and better coordinate national and international efforts to support countries that want to implement policy instruments that are part of the policy basket of the Global Alliance by providing means of implementation, funding and knowledge.

As a knowledge management and capacity-building platform, socialprotection.org is partnering with the Alliance by developing an online collaborative wiki to gather information on a comprehensive range of policy instruments linked to successful national implementation examples aimed at fighting poverty and hunger.

“The platform has an extensive global reach, connecting organizations and experts in social protection worldwide, which aligns with the Global Alliance mission of encouraging collective action by creating synergies among international organizations”, explains Mariana Balboni, Coordinator of the socialprotection.org platform and Senior Programme Officer at UNRISD.

This work is a result of a long-standing partnership with the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA) and the Social Protection Interagency Coordination Board (SPIAC-B). socialprotection.org has worked alongside the IPEA and the Brazilian G20 Presidency to shape the policy basket, a key component of the Global Alliance. The partnership between UNRISD and socialprotection.org will be extremely valuable in helping to realize the vision of the Alliance. Our collective work has a mutual objective of pushing forward the sustainable development agenda and improving the well-being of vulnerable populations, reinforcing a commitment to addressing critical challenges in social protection and in combating hunger and poverty. “UNRISD is deeply honoured to join the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty and to support global and national efforts to accomplish its ambitious goals with our research, advocacy and global networks,” says Katja Hujo, Head of UNRISD Bonn Office. “Working together with socialprotection.org will create important synergies and multiplier effects, and we are excited to embark on this journey together.”

Alongside its programmatic work, the platform is assisting the Alliance with its visual identity, the development and maintenance of its website, social media advocacy, and other editorial efforts while its permanent supporting mechanism is taking shape.

“We are incredibly proud to contribute to this ground-breaking initiative by actively engaging in its development and implementation," highlights Balboni. “We look forward to playing a hands-on role in advancing the objectives of the Alliance.”
