Welcome to the September edition of our monthly newsletter!
This Saturday (12 September) socialprotection.org celebrates its 5th anniversary.  Since its creation in 2015, the platform has been consolidating its role as a reference in knowledge-sharing and capacity-building in the field of social protection. We are now a global network of more than 6,400 practitioners, thanks to our stakeholders and members and to the crucial support of our host and funders - the International Policy Centre for Inclusive Growth (IPC-IG),  the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the German Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ). With their collaboration, we have been able to accomplish the following milestones:
In the past months, we have seen an enormous increase in the attention given to social protection worldwide, due to the social and economic impacts caused by COVID-19. The socialprotection.org platform has been supporting this agenda through the “Social Protection Responses to COVID-19” initiative, created in partnership with the IPC-IG, GIZ and DFAT.

Through an Online Community, a newsletter and a webinar series, we gathered social protection practitioners from all over the world to discuss solutions for the challenges brought up by the pandemic. This initiative has been one of our most important achievements so far and, to finish it with a flourish, we will host the Global e-Conference “Turning the COVID-19 crisis into an opportunity: what’s next for social protection?” on 5, 6 and 8 October 2020.
We also take this opportunity to highlight socialprotection.org’s new features implemented throughout this year, such as the Multimedia and Databases sections. We look forward to sharing more exciting content and developments with you in the near future, including a new Country Profiles section, an Academics page and important improvements in our online communities’ tool. We hope to continue counting on your audience and support!

Online Community
Since its launch, in September 2015, socialprotection.org has been providing free access to a variety of features, including the online communities. Agencies, organisations, research centres, think tanks, and individuals can create unique and customisable online communities dedicated to a particular area related to social protection. Today, we have 58 communities with different purposes and privacy settings. Among them, we highlight some of the most active:
The International Policy Centre for Inclusive Growth (IPC-IG), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the socialprotection.org platform are glad to announce that they have a new online micro-course coming out very soon! The “Social Protection Programmes” is the second* self-paced micro-course of a series. This course aims at identifying the main types of social protection programmes, as well as their design and implementation features. Stay tuned to our communication channels for more information!

*The first micro-course “What is Social Protection? An introduction”, launched in April 2020, introduces conceptual approaches to social protection and explains the possible ways in which it interacts with other policies. Click here to access it.
Registration is now open for the “Extending social protection to migrant workers in Africa: A South-South virtual conference” happening on 15 and 16 September 2020! The event aims to enhance the coordination of south-south cooperation towards improving implementation of frameworks to extend access to social protection and portability of social security benefits to migrant workers. The different COVID-19 response measures that include support to workers and their families will also be presented. The virtual conference, organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in collaboration with the African Union, International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and socialprotection.org, will have simultaneous interpretation into English, French and Portuguese. Click here to access the programme and register!
Soon, we will open the registrations for the Global e-Conference "Turning the COVID-19 crisis into an opportunity: what's next for social protection?", which will take place on 05, 06 and 08 October 2020. We want to thank all our members, partners and stakeholders who have submitted proposals for the conference’s roundtables. We are now going through your valuable contributions and finalising the programme. Click here to access the event’s page and stay tuned for upcoming information on the programme and registration process.

In addition to providing a space to evaluate, share experiences and learn about
social protection responses to COVID-19, the event will be a space for discussing the future of social protection in a post-pandemic scenario. It will also mark socialprotection.org’s 5th anniversary. We hope to see you there!
