October 2020: Disability-inclusive social protection
Welcome to the October edition of our monthly newsletter!
This month’s newsletter is dedicated to the topic of disability-inclusive social protection. According to the World Bank, approximately one billion people worldwide live with disabilities. This number is expected to grow in the future as a result of ageing populations and increases in chronic health conditions associated with impairment and disability.
More than ever, the recent COVID-19 crisis has evidenced the need to promote adequate and inclusive social protection systems and programmes that promote disability-related support, as persons with disability are more likely to live in poor households, have limited access to employment opportunities, and have lower education enrolment and attendance rates.
In this issue, we highlight many resources related to this theme, including one of the sessions of our Global e-Conference “Turning the COVID-19 crisis into an opportunity: What’s next for social protection?”, which took place from 5 to 8 October 2020 and also marked socialprotection.org’s 5th anniversary. For more information about the discussions held during the conference, access this blog post, which highlights the sessions’ main topics and outputs and provides links to the recordings.
We are also pleased to share with you two important publications:
