Social Protection in the Sahel and West Africa - Strengthening resilience for food security and nutrition

The Sahel and West Africa is one of the world’s poorest, least developed and most food insecure regions, with the fastest growing population. On average, an estimated 20 million people face food insecurity every year during the lean season. Malnutrition rates are among the highest in the world, with 5.9 million children under the age of five acutely malnourished in 2016, and one-third of the world’s under-five mortality due to undernutrition.
