The Social Protection Landscape in Australia: A Snapshot

Australia’s social protection programmes have often served as a reference for other countries due to their innovative and unique design features. This brief provides an overview of four of its cornerstone programmes - Medicare, financial assistance schemes for higher education, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and superannuation - and examines how some of these unique features work in practice. It also highlights some of the challenges of designing and implementing social protection programmes in the context of increasing costs and pressures from population ageing.
