The Intergenerational Impact of China’s New Rural Pension Scheme

Old‐age pensions have become an important component of systems aimed at protecting the elderly against poverty. The expansion of pension schemes can partly be attributed to important demographic changes that have pressured welfare institutions to respond to the demands of a growing elderly population. The study described here examines whether, and the extent to which, China's New Rural Pension Scheme (NRPS) has affected the intergenerational transmission of wealth in a country where the population has aged rapidly. We used a nationally representative panel survey, the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which collected data in 2011 and 2013, to answer these questions.
