Gender-responsive social protection and disability: Thematic brief
Gender-responsive social protection and disability: Thematic brief
Women and girls with disabilities experience significant discrimination and high rates of poverty. They are more likely to experience violence than other women and have higher unemployment rates. Girls with disabilities are more likely to be out of school than boys with disabilities and older women are more likely to have a disability than older men. Their economic situation is likely worse because of disability-related costs, reduced earning power and less access to pensions and savings. These challenges are exacerbated in the context of crises and climate change, and for women and girls facing intersecting discrimination because of LGBT+ status, race or ethnicity.
