Unequal Prospects: Disparities in the Quantity and Quality of Labour Supply in Sub-Saharan Africa

Despite the data limitations there is little doubt that the basic demographic characteristics that will continue to influence the supply of labor, both the absolute supply and its quality, differ very substantially across Sub-Saharan Africa. This paper includes the following headings: summary; cross-country comparative data on labor supply; the future quality of the labor force -- nutrition, health, and education status; improving the quality of labor supply -- constraints and policy opportunities; characteristics and determinants of labor mobility -- opportunities for poverty reduction; and some implications of a new policy focus on the poorest, most disadvantaged labor force entrants.
