SPEC Infographic Series: Expanded Public Works Program (EPWP) - South Africa

The EPWP is a program led by the Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Department for Social Development (DSD) of the South African Government. It provides labour and income to poor households in the short to mediumterm, using public expenditure to boost productive employment and to develop marketable skills among the unemployed. It is one of the flagship programs of South Africa, which contributes to its policy priorities in decent work and sustainable livelihoods, education, health, rural development, food security and land reform, and the fight against crime and corruption. One of the prescripts of the EPWP is to use labour-intensive methods which allow a significant number of participants into the program to do the work.

Social Protection for Employment Community (SPEC), supported by DFAT and GIZ, has published a series of 9 infographics on employment generation programs linked to social protection. These programs aim to boost productivity and income and build resilience of the poor. The objective of the infographics is to help readers learn the key features of these programs. They also provide links for further learning. This infographic on Expanded Public Works Program (EPWP) - South Africa is one of the infographics published by SPEC.
