Policy Brief: Informal Work in South Africa and COVID-19: Gendered Impacts and Priority Interventions

In South Africa, informal workers in general, and women informal workers in particular, have been disproportionately hard hit by measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Many became unemployed and those who are still working report shorter working journeys and/or lower salaries especially compared to the period prior to the crisis. This brief will show that informal workers have been missed in COVID-19 impact mitigation initiatives. To alleviate this situation, some gaps such as supporting small businesses and child care.
