Gender-responsive social protection and health and nutrition: Thematic brief

Health and nutrition are fundamental components for women and girls’ educational attainment and productive employment, providing greater economic security and well-being. Girls and women face heightened health and nutrition risks throughout the life cycle, such as vulnerability to malnutrition, risk of sexually transmitted diseases and face limited access to specialist sexual, reproductive and maternal health services. Women and girls’ health and nutrition are dependent on the availability and quality of food and services, as well as on social norms which may restrict women’s own decision-making over their health, body and well-being. These challenges are exacerbated in the context of chronic poverty, crises and climate change, and for women and girls facing intersecting discrimination because of disability, LGBT+ status, race or ethnicity.
