In sub-Saharan Africa, sixty five percent (65%) of the labour force is engaged in agriculture, which contributes for 32% of the Gross Domestic Product, while having the highest poverty. Other relevant characteristics relate to the increasing feminization of the rural labour force and the phenomenon of child labour in rural activities. Women smallholder farmers constitute the majority of food producers but remain vulnerable. Likewise, youth engaged in rural economic activities are exposed to hazardous work.
