Case studies on social protection and food and nutrition security: Ethiopia, The Gambia, Kenya, Mozambique and Zambia

The WFP Centre of Excellence launched a new publication that gathers five papers about social protection in African countries. Called “Case studies on social protection and food and nutrition security”, the publication promotes knowledge sharing and diffusion of a wide range of tested policies and experiences on how social protection initiatives can contribute to increasing food and nutrition security.

The WFP Centre of Excellence commissioned the Economic Policy Research Institute (EPRI), based in South Africa, to analyse the cases of Ethiopia, the Gambia, Kenya, Mozambique, and Zambia. From a holistic and systems approach, the case studies have found evidence that cash transfers, home-grown school feeding programmes and input subsidies, amongst other programmes, improved access, availability, stability, and utilisation of food for these countries.
