Programme objectives

This program lies under the Contributory Pensions Act of 1970 with the main purpose to provide assistance to qualified individuals without any contributory pension. The principal target population is the elderly and people with disability who lack basic income of their own.

Targeting and eligiblity

Eligibility criteria
Requirements for age (65 years or more; 18-65 years for persons with disability) and residency. There is a residency requirement to be eligible for the program, which is to have ordinarily resided in Bermuda for 10 years during the 20 years period preceding the date of claim. In the same sense, recipients who are not living in Bermuda ordinarily are disqualified for the benefit. Moreover, persons under imprisonment do not have entitlement for the pension.

Amount of benefits
Persons over 65 years old: High rate : BM$106.83 per week (2014). Low rate : BM$103.81 per week (2014). People with income lower than BM$4,000 per year will receive the high rate, and the low rate if otherwise. Persons with disability from 18 to 65 years old:BM$103.81 per week (2014); Since 1985, the rate of non-contributory disability benefit is the same as the lower rate of non-contributory old-age pension. The claimants of this benefit should present a certificate from a registered medical practitioner proving their incapability of gainful employment permanently.
