In place since the country’s independence in the 1970s, the programme underwent structural reforms in the late 1990s to strengthen the role of civil society in the execution of projects; to integrate FAIMO workers in the formal labour market or in some form of independent work; and to reform the institutional framework responsible for the programme’s activities. A non-contributory pension scheme began in 1992 for exFAIMO workers which was later unified with other non-contributory schemes under the Social Pension programme.
