Op-Ed: Ukraine Refugee Response: Lessons Learnt from the Greece Refugee Response

To ensure that agencies can effectively, efficiently and promptly provide support to refugees from Ukraine in Poland, Hungary, Romania and Moldova, it is important to learn from the lessons from the last EU centred refugee response in Greece. In 2016/2017, I worked for Mercy Corps and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red crescent on the Greece response. Drawing on my experiences on that response and discussions with other aid workers, who worked on the response (including my wife), I have prepared the below list of lessons learnt from that response that may be useful in the current refugee emergency. These lessons learnt are not relevant directly to the Ukraine country response, although there may be some overlap.
