Do govt direct cash transfers influence voters, Supreme Court asks Election Commission

The Supreme Court has sought to delve deep into direct cash transfers under social welfare schemes during the recently concluded General Elections after a petitioner alleged that it amounted to bribing voters. Citing data on the schemes that facilitated transfer of money to farmers, the elderly, women self-help groups and agriculturists, the petitioner said that though the cash installments reached the beneficiaries days before the polling date, the EC failed to stop the transfers as the schemes were in vogue before the announcement of the Model Code of Conduct.
