Strong Impacts of Adaptive Social Protection in the Sahel
Strong Impacts of Adaptive Social Protection in the Sahel
Adaptive social protection is proven to have strong positive impacts on poverty, food insecurity, productivity, and resilience among the poorest and most vulnerable. These impacts also extend more broadly to society, the economy, and future generations. The impacts of adaptive social protection in the Sahel include:
- 3 percent reduction in extreme poverty through social safety nets in Senegal — in just three years.
- 50-100 percent increase in income among women who participated in a sustainable livelihoods program in Niger.
- 25 percent reduction in the proportion of households who could not maintain education and health costs when shocks occurred in Mauritania.
- 14.3 percent higher school enrolment rate among children who had participated in safety net programs in Burkina Faso when compared to those who had not.
- For every dollar invested, the incomes in the local economy increase by US$1.30 to US$2.50 (+130% to 250%) in Africa.
Adaptive social protection is a set of social protection policies, instruments, and programs. It is a highly effective approach to building the resilience of the poorest and most vulnerable and to supporting them to better prepare for, cope with, and adapt to shocks.
