Data protection for social protection: key issues for low- and middle-income countries

Digital technologies offer enormous opportunities for social protection systems in low and middle-income countries. But the risks to privacy and personal data seem just as high. Is there a way to meet this challenge successfully? A new paper, commissioned by GIZ’s Sector Initiative Social Protection and compiled for the Social Protection Interagency Collaboration Board (SPIAC-B), concludes: Yes, there is. The use of new technology does not need to create a contradiction between the protection of personal data and social protection. But it needs a deep discussion on this topic among social protection authorities as well as special support for practitioners.
