Previous OECD reports have concluded that disability policy has changed substantially in many OECD countries in recent decades. Nevertheless, large employment gaps remain between people with a disability and those without. This paper builds on earlier OECD analysis and recent extensions to OECD’s tax-benefit model (http://oe.cd/TaxBEN) for selected countries. The paper aims to assess the adequacy of income support programmes for people with reduced work capacity and their related work incentives.

Drawing on a new study of social policy in seven European countries, Michael Pinggera explains that parties increasingly focus on ‘bridge policies’ – policies that are popular among both their support base and the general electorate.

The 2020 Monitor assesses the state of social Europe in terms of equality of opportunities, fair working conditions, social protection, inclusion and civic space. It does so on the basis of observations of National Strategy Groups (NSG) set up in each of the 17 countries by a SOLIDAR member or partner. The US state of California has voted to keep rideshare and delivery industry workers as independent contractors in the recent election cycle. The Financial Times, in its editorial titled ‘A California setback for gig economy workers’, was quick to denounce the referendum, calling on other US lawmakers to not follow suit.

Christine Jardine, a Scottish politician who represents Edinburgh in the UK parliament, was not a fan of universal basic income before the pandemic hit.  "It was regarded in some quarters as a kind of socialist idea," said Jardine, a member of the centrist Liberal Democrats party. This chapter has two goals: the first is to conduct a comparative analysis of the compulsory and contributory unemployment protection systems in four countries (Spain, Italy, Argentina and Uruguay) participating in the INCASI project: What are their similarities and differences?; the second aim is to analyse the trends in the reforms of the unemployment benefit systems. To do so we ask: Despite the differences between countries, are there common trends in the reform policy?

What are the effects of fiscal imbalances, and austerity, on regional-level spending? To answer this question, we examine an original dataset of yearly spending decisions of regional governments in Italy and Spain between 2003 and 2015. We find that the rise in regional deficits has an important negative effect on regional governments’ spending. The strength of this effect is, however, mitigated by the presence of a left-wing party in regional office.
