The International Social Security (ISS) project compares the experiences of a dozen developed countries to study Social Security Programs and Retirement Around the World. The project was launched in the mid 1990s and was motivated by decades of decline in the labor force participation rate of older men. The first phases of the project documented that social security program provisions can create powerful incentives for retirement that are strongly correlated with the labor force behavior of older workers.

The Recommendations at the end of the report produced by the HLG on the Future of Social Protection in the EU and of the Welfare State are relevant for Member States – but what are the opportunities and the challenges that Member States would face in implementing them and realising resilient, inclusive, effective welfare states?

One in seven working age adults identifies as having a disability in OECD countries. Many of them are excluded from meaningful work and have low levels of income and social engagement. Governments can help create an environment that supports social and labour market integration for people with disability. This report reviews the effectiveness of the social protection system for people with disability in Italy and summarises the results of a pilot carried out in four regions testing an alternative disability assessment.

The study complements the 2021 study on seasonal work and summarises the key challenges related to seasonal work. As the arrangements around seasonal work differ substantially between Member States the report looks into the situation in four key destination countries for agricultural seasonal workers, France, Italy, Germany and Spain in more detail, thereby exploring working conditions as well as data availability.
