Description

The National Health Insurance Scheme Nigeria is designed to provide easy access to health care for all Nigerians. The Scheme has achieved about 98% coverage of federal government employees. Coverage of state formal and informal sectors has been abysmally low. Efforts to amend the Act establishing the Scheme to make it more effective have not yielded the desired results.

Fortunately, the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, as provided for in the National Health Act 2014, has specified clearly that coverage for the attainment of Universal Health would start with the informal sector. The Scheme, in conjunction with relevant stakeholders, is presently working out SOPs, structures, guidelines, etc., preparatory for the implementation of the Act.
