Chad: Country Profile

Chad is surrounded by several new and protracted conflicts, creating significant potential security and stability challenges. In the East, approximately 310,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in the past ten years; security threats along the Libyan border are significant in the North; and in southern Chad, 70,414 Central African refugees and 101,724 returnees still live in refugee and returnee camps and in host villages. Since early 2015, the crisis in Nigeria has led to the displacement of approximately 2.7 million people around Lake Chad, including some 130,000 internally displaced people and 8,500 refugees from Nigeria. Together with the financial crisis, Chad faces a disproportionally high risk of national instability which could further aggravate the situation for vulnerable populations in need of food, nutrition, health, and improved access to livelihoods to build resilience.
