As per the request of the G20 Development Working Group, the prototype of the Social Protection Knowledge Sharing platform was developed with the intention of serving as a repository of learning resources on social protection to policymakers, development practitioners and specialists, with a focus on MICs, LICs and on South-South Learning.

The unbranded platform, currently hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and facilitated by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australia and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ), represents an amalgamation of multiple databases on social protection. From September 2015 to December 2022 the platform was hosted by the former International Policy Centre for Inclusive Growth (IPC-IG).

The platform benefits from the support of the Social Protection Inter-agency Cooperation Board (SPIAC-B) and the active collaboration of a broad range of partners, including governments, international organisations, research centres and academia, and non-governmental organisations, all sharing the common goal of offering an open and neutral space for the promotion of social protection.
