Social protection for elderly in South Africa

By 2020, around 10% of Indonesia’s population will be aged 60 years and above. The highest rates of extreme poverty are found among the elderly, where one in five are living below the national poverty line. Women are more impacted than men, as they are often widowed and lack support. This is the time for Indonesia to invest in social protection for the elderly population to prepare for the future. To recommend policy options to the Government of Indonesia, the National Team for the Accelaration of Poverty Reduction (TNP2K), under the Vice President's office of Indonesia in partnership with Indonesia’s Fiscal Policy Agency of the Ministry of Finance  and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) hosted an International Conference on Social Protection for Elderly in Jakarta on 22 May 2018. This presentation was made by Pathamavathy Naicker, Social Protection Agency of South Africa, at the conference.
