This strategic foresight report examines how long-term demographic, economic and environmental trends are likely to interact in six East African countries over the next 50 years and the implications for poverty, employment and livelihoods. Based on these findings, the report highlights seven grand challenges facing policy makers in the region and explains how social protection can serve not only as a means of overcoming these obstacles but can also play a vital role in promoting development over the next 50 years. While some of these are long-term challenges, the policy response should start today.
