A pilot targeted poverty alleviation program, namely, Rural Economy Advancement Programme (REAP I) was initiated in 10th five-year plan in 17 poorest villages covering 10 Dzongkhags to target extreme poverty that may not be adequately addressed by mainstream development plan programs. Recognizing the importance and effectiveness of the targeted poverty interventions, REAP II is planned for 109 villages covering 20 Dzongkhags.
The village development plans for all 109 villages are prepared by the communities themselves The underlying principles of the program shall be to secure sustainable livelihood even after the completion of the project. Hence, the activities under the program shall have long term impact in uplifting the poverty. The key interventions shall be to generate cash income, improve food security, living standards, and the replicable interventions shall be up scaled in other villages and region.
