Governments in the Asia-Pacific region are taking administrative and policy actions to cope with COVID-19 pandemic and its adverse impacts. Most countries and territories have adopted travel restrictions and social distancing policies to slow the spread of the disease. While many countries have rolled out fiscal and monetary stimulus packages, their scale and policy focus differ depending on their national circumstances, implementation capacities and how severely they have been affected by COVID-19 disease.

From late March to end April 2020, WIEGO tracked how governments were addressing the urgent needs of informal workers during this health and economic crisis.  The World Bank identified 133 countries that, by mid-April, had created or expanded social protection or jobs measures to help address the economic emergency. Through our analysis, we learned that even where governments designed packages with informal workers in mind, the promised aid could be inadequate, or problems with identifying and registering informal workers could impede distribution.
