The unprecedented speed and scale needed to decarbonize our economies will inevitably entail significant disruptions and structural changes to systems and supply chains that have been in place for decades. These disruptions can be an opportunity to create new and quality jobs, develop green industries, bridge development gaps (such as energy poverty and gender inequality), and enhance well-being. But they also present socioeconomic risks that must be identified and managed.

The most important strategic provision of the National Report 2008–2010 is that by implementing its social protection and social inclusion policy the Government of the Republic of Lithuania will continue working to ensure high quality of living for everybody in Lithuania. In this process the principles of equality between men and women will be taken into consideration. The strategy envisages pursuing the policy of active inclusion where employment and social policies complement each other.

This National Social Development Policy is a sectoral policy document at national level. Climatic shocks are exerting pressure on livelihoods of Zimbabwe's smallholder farmer—who irrigate only 2% of their farms. The smallholder farmers in drought-prone areas are more exposed to drought because of their limited ability to cope with shocks and their greater concentration in less favorable climatic regions. This study was done to analyze shock-response approaches, which farmers use to cope with climatic shocks.

In order to contribute to the literature on the relationship between income and deforestation, this study investigates the impact of the Bolsa Familia program – one of the largest conditional cash transfer programs – on forest clearings. Using a difference-in-differences approach and an event study, we take advantage of a change in the program’s allocation methodology for municipal quotas as an exogenous source. Our main findings show an increase in deforestation in both the Amazon and Cerrado biomes, with the Amazon being the main focus of clearings.

The idea of a global fund for social protection has taken hold over the last decade as a potential solution to structural gaps in the global financial and development architectures that have failed to ensure social protection receives an equitable share of development resources available and have left 4.14 billion people – or 53.1% of the world’s population – especially those in low- and middle-income countries, excluded from any social protection scheme.

In this brief, we seek to establish the shared objectives of social protection and climate action and explore how including social protection in climate documents and acknowledging climate risks in social protection documents at the national level can provide a significant boost to the recognition of social protection as a relevant climate risk management tool. The brief is intended for policy-makers as well as practitioners, informing policy in these sectors, and is expected to foster a synergistic approach to address climate challenges and social vulnerabilities.
